Partial and Full Dental Dentures

According to the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP), 120 million Americans are missing at least one tooth, and more than 36 million Americans do not have any teeth at all. If you fall into either of these categories, you may be wondering about possible tooth replacement treatments. At Neu Family Dental, we offer several solutions to help restore the function and aesthetics of your smile, including partial and full dentures.

Partial Dentures

A partial denture is a removable tooth replacement option that is used when some or most of your natural teeth are still present. Most partial dentures consist of replacement teeth that are attached to a flesh-colored acrylic base. The partial denture is usually held in place by a metal framework that attaches to the surrounding healthy teeth. In some cases, crowns are placed over the natural teeth, and in others, we use metal clasps.

Partial dentures may be necessary for some reasons. First, it provides an esthetically-pleasing and functional replacement for missing teeth. It also serves as a placeholder for your remaining teeth. Once a tooth is lost, your remaining teeth will compensate for the open space. This can cause them to shift out of place, leading to a misalignment with your bite. We can use a partial denture to prevent this from happening.

Full Dentures

There are two types of full dentures: conventional and immediate. Both types of dentures are used when there is total tooth loss in either the upper or lower jaw. A conventional full denture is placed in the mouth several months after any remaining teeth have been removed, and your gum tissues are fully healed. During this time, you may be without teeth. Our dental laboratory will fabricate your conventional denture using a molded impression of your gums.

If you would like to avoid the hassle and embarrassment of not having teeth, we may recommend an immediate full denture. An immediate full denture is placed immediately after the extraction of any remaining teeth. Dr. Neu will take measurements and make models of your jaw before this appointment. It is important to note that your immediate denture is only a temporary measure. As you heal from your extractions, your jaw and gum tissues tend to shrink. This can lead to an ill-fit denture. Ultimately, you will be given a conventional denture to ensure a proper fit.

Caring for Your Partial or Full Denture

Care and maintenance of a denture is pretty straightforward. After you receive your new restoration, we will give you a detailed set of instructions. A proper daily hygiene routine and regular checkups are crucial. If you notice any changes with the fit of your denture, you should contact use immediately, rather than trying to fix it yourself. Over time, your mouth will naturally change. Most dentures will need to be relined, repaired, or replaced every five to eight years, although this depends on some factors. If you have any questions about your new denture, be sure to ask them before you leave our office.
