What Types of Dental Emergencies Do You Call Us For?

Posted on 8/20/2018 by Bryan Neu
What Types of Dental Emergencies Do You Call Us For?The definition of an emergency varies. Young children may think it is an emergency when their television shuts off. Others may think it is not an emergency until they are taking their final breath.

Real emergencies fall somewhere in between these extremes. When it comes to dental emergencies, it is not always easy to know when you need to call us for help.

The Obvious Emergencies

If you suffer trauma that damages your teeth, gums or mouth, you are probably in need of help right away. Depending on the severity of the injuries, you may require help at the nearest emergency room. If the trauma results in lost, broken or chipped teeth, you can call our office for an emergency appointment. Try to bring any pieces of a tooth that is broken into the office.

Questions to Ask

If you are not sure if you have a dental emergency, you can ask yourself a few questions.

•  Are you bleeding - Bleeding in the mouth could be a serious problem.
•  How bad is the pain - If the pain is more than you can manage, call for help.
•  Are any teeth loose - Get help before a loose tooth becomes a lost tooth.
•  Do you have swelling in the mouth or gums - This is a sign of a possible infection or other problem that needs attention.
•  Do you notice any pus in your mouth - This is a sign of an infection that is getting worse.

Answering yes to any of these questions does not guarantee you have a dental emergency that needs immediate attention. It does mean that you need to call our offices, so we can help you decide if you need help now or if it can wait. In most cases, the earlier we deal with a dental emergency, the easier it is to get a successful outcome.

If you think you have a dental emergency, do not wait. Contact our office right away.
