Hard Toothbrushes Can Wreck Havok on Your Gums

Hard Toothbrushes Can Wreck Havok on Your GumsIf you want to keep your gums in good shape, you need to use a toothbrush with soft bristles. Don't use a firm brush, as doing so can scratch the gums or abrade them, leading to recession.

Using the right dental equipment is just as important as brushing and flossing your teeth after you eat. You just want to make sure you use a gentle technique. Otherwise, you will defeat the purpose of brushing your teeth.

Are You Using the Right Method?

When you brush your teeth, you need to do so properly. To use the right approach, you also need to use the right toothbrush. If you want to avoid any problems with enamel or gum abrasion, you need to use a toothbrush with softer bristles. Doing so will help you clean your teeth and gums effectively without injuring them. Use a soft-bristled brush, holding it at a 45-degree angle. You should aim toward the part of the gumline where the tooth meets the gum.

To continue, you need to brush the inside and outside of the teeth and the chewing surfaces, using short back-and-forth strokes and circular motions. You also need to brush the tongue, as it collects a good deal of bacteria and plaque. Brushing the tongue will also prevent problems with halitosis. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a toothpaste containing fluoride. Brushing twice a day, in the morning and before bed, should keep your teeth and gums in good shape.

If you think using a harder-bristled brush will deep clean your teeth, you need to reconsider the idea. While the hard bristles will remove plaque, they also can cause more abrasion. The soft bristles prevent problems with recession and wear and offer more flexibility when you try to brush in-between teeth. Give us a call today to schedule a check-up and cleaning.
