Important Facts to Know About Peri-ImplantitisPeri-Implantitis sounds like a very serious condition, and quite frankly, it is. It is an inflammatory, site-specific infection that can cause inflammation, tissue loss and even bone loss around an implanted tooth. Today, we are going to look at some of the things you need to know about peri-implantitis, how to treat it, and most importantly, how to avoid it.

What You Need to Know

Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory disease that we can identify by the loss of supporting bone, excessive bleeding and occasionally tooth loss surrounding a dental implant. Diabetes, osteoporosis and a prior history of periodontitis can be contributing factors to putting you at a higher risk for developing peri-implantitis. Additionally, if you have poor oral hygiene, smoke or use tobacco products or consume alcohol, you are putting yourself in danger for developing this inflammatory disease. Another leading cause of peri-implantitis is getting an implant from a dentist who is not trained well enough when it comes to implants. Excessive cement, not knowing a patient's dental history and substandard materials play a role in the development of peri-implantitis.

Treating Peri-Implantitis

Unfortunately, removing the dental implant may be one of the ways we treat this disease, along with antibiotics. Depending on the extent of the damage done by the disease, bone and tissue loss may result in bone grafts and tissue grafts. If the infection is caught early, we can sometimes treat it with a chlorhexidine oral rinse and antibiotics.
