Is Brushing When You Have a Dental Implant Any Different Than Your Original Teeth?
Posted on 7/7/2020 by Bryan Neu
Dental implants function similarly to natural teeth in that they are designed to allow you to eat, speak, and smile as you would with a full set of your original teeth. But cleaning them has slight differences and today we will be going over how to brush dental implants safely and effectively to avoid damaging them
Can You Brush Implants with Toothpaste?
One of the first questions you might be asking regarding brushing implants is if you can use the same toothpaste that you use for natural teeth. The answer is yes, but there is an important caveat to know before jumping in.
Many kinds of toothpaste sold on the market, especially ones designed for whitening. Contain high levels of abrasiveness to get rid of yellow-colored teeth. However, implants do not work like natural teeth when it comes to whitening. Abrasive ingredients that are found in whitening toothpaste such as baking soda only help to damage the implanted tooth. It is important to look for toothpaste with the lowest abrasive rating possible when brushing your implants.
What Kind of Toothbrush Should You Use?
When selecting a toothbrush for your implants, you are going to want to look for two different kinds of toothbrushes to use ideally. One is the same soft-bristled kind that we recommend everyone use for their natural teeth, and the other is called an Interdental brush- a type of brush made for getting between hard-to-reach areas.
The regular toothbrush is used for general cleaning while the Interdental brush is for cleaning around a tooth with greater precision to get rid of pesky plaque that may be hard to get with a regular, larger toothbrush.
