What's the Difference Between an Orthodontist and a Dentist?
Posted on 4/26/2021 by Bryan Neu
Both dentists and orthodontists specialize in oral healthcare but differently. They're both doctors who practice general dentistry and undergo training to examine, diagnose and treat different oral conditions in your teeth, gums, and mouth. However, orthodontists undergo additional training to specialize in treating teeth and jaw misalignments.
At Neu Family Dental, Dr. Neu and our doctors can perform a routine dental checkup to check for misalignments and recommend corrective course of action.
Howare Dentists and Orthodontists Similar?
First and foremost, they're both doctors that deal with teeth and gums and have undergone the same initial training. An orthodontist can provide the same care as a dentist and can also work in a dental clinic. In some cases, their services might overlap as dentists in some states are permitted to provide orthodontic treatments, such as installing braces.
Overall, both strive to achieve healthy smiles and often work together to provide the best overall dental health.

How Are they Different?
There are more differences than similarities between an orthodontist and a dentist. Dentists complete a general dental degree, whereas orthodontists complete a general dental degree then a three-year specialist degree. A dentist is similar to a general physician and provides a wide range of services, from dental cleanings to teeth repairing.
In contrast, an orthodontist specializes in tooth and jaw alignment, providing different types of treatments such as retainers and braces. They also perform teeth straightening surgery and install other dental appliances such as palatal expanders and orthodontic headgear.
At Neu Family Dental, Dr. Neu or our doctors can guide you regarding the dental treatment you need and recommend an orthodontist if required. To schedule an appointment with us, call us at (847) 230-9143 today.
