They know that they go once or twice a year for a cleaning, those at risk or those who are young might get dental x-rays at the dentist, and the dentist might recommend filling cavities or putting on a crown. However, the average person does not know the difference between a prosthodontist and a cosmetic, or every day, dentist. So here are some of the procedures a prosthodontist might do.
Common Procedures for Prosthodontists
One of the most common procedures we prosthodontists might do is a dental implant. A dental implant consists of inserting some strong base, now usually done with titanium, into the jaw. This is one of the first procedures required with extensive tooth work. This titanium base is the foundation for one or more fake teeth, depending on the needs of the patient.
Another common procedure done by us prosthodontists is work with cleft palate. A cleft palate is a hole in the palate, or the top ridge of the mouth. This is most common as a birth defect in children, with a restorative surgery done while they are young. The prosthodontist will work to join the palate back together in such a way that, as the child continues to grow and develop, the hole does not reopen.
A final common procedure is temporomandibular disorders (TMJ/TMD), or problems with your jaw joint. With chewing and talking, issues with the jaw joint are serious and can lead to extreme discomfort, headaches, earaches, or even neck and shoulder pain. Prosthodontists are best in these situations, as there is no “one size fits all” solution to these issues.
