Porcelain Dental Bridges
Your teeth perform numerous essential functions. They enable you to bite and chew food, they control airflow, allowing you to speak properly, and they provide you with a beautiful smile. When your teeth are healthy, you most likely do not spend much time thinking about them, or what they do for you. However, tooth loss, even losing just one tooth, affects all of the functions of your teeth. Eating and speaking become a challenge. Your smile and your confidence suffer. Your healthy teeth begin to shift out of alignment. Suddenly, your teeth are all you can think about. Replacing missing teeth is essential for restoring your quality of life. At Neu Family Dental, we can replace small numbers of missing teeth with a porcelain bridge.
What Exactly Is a Bridge?
A bridge is a restoration that bridges the gap left behind by up to three consecutive missing teeth in any area of your mouth. There are a few different types of bridges available, but the most common type is a fixed bridge. This restoration is made from a single piece of porcelain and consists of replacement teeth, which fill the space left behind by your missing teeth, with one dental crown on each side. The dental crowns are essentially anchors, which affix to the teeth adjacent to the gap, providing the bridge with stability.
Reasons for a Porcelain Bridge
Bridges can be made from several different materials. At Neu Family Dental , our bridges are made from porcelain. While porcelain is often associated with delicate dishware, the porcelain for bridges is strong, able to stand up to normal daily use. Porcelain also mimics the properties of your natural teeth. It can be finished to perfectly blend in with the color of your surrounding teeth. It also reflects light in a similar manner to enamel, which further provides it with a more natural appearance. These are just a few of the benefits of porcelain bridges. Other benefits include:
How a Bridge Is Placed
Porcelain bridges take two appointments to complete. At your first appointment, your abutment teeth (those adjacent to the space) are prepared and impressions are taken. The teeth are prepared by removing a portion of your enamel to reduce them in size. This creates the space necessary for the bridge to fit comfortably. After the teeth are prepared, which is done under a local anesthetic, the impressions are taken. These impressions are sent to the lab, where the bridge is created. It can take a couple of weeks for the bridge to be completed, so a temporary restoration is placed to protect your abutment teeth in the meantime. Once the bridge is ready, you return for your second appointment. During this appointment, we check to make sure the bridge fits, looks natural, and is comfortable before we cement is securely into place.
Even losing a single tooth can have a serious impact on your oral health, and your quality of life. If you are missing between one and three teeth in one area of your mouth, a porcelain bridge may be the answer. Call Neu Family Dental today to schedule your consultation at (847) 230-9143.
