Your teeth play many important roles in your mouth. One of these roles is contributing to the quality of your smile. When your teeth are discolored, it greatly affects the quality of your smile and can have a significant impact on your confidence. You may even find yourself hiding your smile from those around you. At Neu Family Dental, we can help to restore the brilliance to your smile with tooth whitening.
Causes of Discoloration
The outermost layer of your teeth, the enamel, is exceptionally hard, and naturally bright white in color. However, over time, normal wear causes microscopic fractures to form. These microfractures capture stains, pigments, and other debris, all of which cause the dulling of your teeth. Common contributing factors to discoloration include:
How Tooth Whitening Works
At Neu Family Dental, we offer you professional whitening that you can do in the comfort of your own home. Before we provide you with what you need, we first perform a thorough oral exam. If you have any restorations, such as crowns, veneers, bonding, or tooth-colored fillings that have become discolored, these will need to be replaced. Whitening treatments will not have any effect on restorations. After your exam, we take impressions of your mouth. These impressions are used to create custom trays. We provide you with the trays, the whitening agent, and specific instructions for use.
At home, you apply the whitening agent in the trays and place the trays on your teeth. They are meant to be worn for a few hours twice a day, or overnight while you sleep. On the teeth, the whitening agent begins to break down, and oxygen bubbles enter the enamel, clinging to stains and bleaching them away. You will typically start to see results in 3 days, with the teeth becoming whiter as treatment continues. Treatment lasts one to two weeks depending on your specific circumstances.
Is Tooth Whitening Safe?
Tooth whitening is very safe. If anything, you may notice a little tooth sensitivity during your treatment. This can be managed with a toothpaste formulated specifically for sensitive teeth. Sensitivity should dissipate within a couple of days following the completion of your whitening treatment.
How Long Does Tooth Whitening Last?
When you do not smoke and do not drink coffee or tea, whitening can last a few years with little to no change. However, whitening is not a permanent procedure. The same factors that discolored your teeth can do so again. There are a few things you can do to keep the results as long as possible:
Can I Just Use Over-the-Counter Products?
You may have noticed numerous over-the-counter whitening products on store shelves. These products include toothpaste, gels, strips and more. While they may seem like an affordable option, these products contain very low levels of whitening agents. They advertise drastic results in a short period, but they rarely deliver. It can take a long time to achieve even a minor change in the color of your teeth. If you want great results in a short period, professional whitening is the way to go.
With tooth whitening, the brilliant whiteness of your teeth is restored, and can also help to restore your confidence. Call Neu Family Dental to learn more and schedule your consultation today at (847) 230-9143.
